Java and Oekaki
After tinkering with Java and finding the newest version to be complete garbage (slow, not to mention how it messes up oekaki) I decided to do some looking around.

This doesn't seem to affect ALL users. Maybe it's just WinXP. But the newer Java versions cause the water brush to only work if you min/max canvas, Float mode makes your canvas blank, all sorts of problems.

The last stable version of Java that I know works with oekaki is 6.7. Found here: Sun's Java archive.

It works, but the only unfortunate thing is that Firefox's newest version does not support any Java below 6.10. It literally does not work.

Newest versions of Internet Explorer and Opera both work with Java 6.7.

The above only affects the applets Shi Painter, Shi Painter Pro, and Paint BBS. (probably OekakiBBS as well but I haven't used that in ages since last I heard it only works on Win98)

The good news is that the oekaki applets Chibi Paint and Lascaux Sketch work with newer Java. Lascaux Paint is in Alpha Testing stage with signups here.

So all I can say, is to either stick with older Java as I do, or if you frequent a board with the older applets, and have new Java, encourage them to add the Chibi Paint applet if possible.

Addition: Firefox 3.5.7 will be updated until August 2010. It's usable until then (and after of course, if you want to) and I highly recommend only updating to 3.6 at the last minute. It was a big pain, both with java and addons.

This post is very informative - thanks! I added it to the memories.

Thank you for investigating that! It pretty much confirms what I've discovered for myself. I wish I could stick to old versions of Java, but with a toddler who wants to play online games, it just isn't feasible :< But chibi painter has been a lifesaver and I need to draw more oekaki.
